What Markulate's AI does
Markulate uses large language model (LLM) AI technology to analyse student written responses against the rubric criteria you provide. For each submission, the AI generates a suggested mark and a written rationale explaining how the response maps to each rubric criterion.
These are suggestions — not decisions. Every suggestion must be reviewed and approved by the educator before it becomes a mark.
What Markulate's AI does not do
- It does not issue final grades. No mark is recorded without educator review and approval.
- It does not learn from your content. Student scripts and rubrics you upload are not used to train, fine-tune, or improve any AI model — ours or our providers'.
- It does not make autonomous decisions. The AI is a first-pass tool. The educator is the decision-maker.
- It does not flag or report students. Markulate does not perform plagiarism detection, academic misconduct identification, or any form of student surveillance.
- It does not retain content for AI purposes. Uploaded content is processed and then handled according to our data retention policy. It is not stored in AI systems.
Our AI commitments
AI model providers
Markulate uses third-party AI infrastructure to process submissions. Our providers are bound by data processing agreements that prohibit them from using your content for model training or any purpose beyond processing your specific request. We will update this page if our AI provider changes.
Known limitations of AI marking
We believe in being honest about what AI can and cannot do reliably:
- AI marking suggestions may not always capture nuance, creativity, or context the way an experienced educator would
- Highly subjective or discipline-specific rubric criteria may produce less consistent suggestions
- AI performance may vary across different writing styles, languages, and subject areas
- Suggestions should always be treated as a starting point, not a final answer
This is precisely why educator review is built into every step of the Markulate workflow — not as a formality, but as a genuine safeguard.
Institutional guidance
We recommend that educators check their institution's policy on the use of AI tools with student work before using Markulate. If your institution requires a Data Processing Agreement or security review, please contact us at hello@markulate.com and we will work with you to provide the documentation you need.
